allaway County was founded on November 25, 1820 from Howard and Montgomery Counties and named in honor of James Callaway, a Missouri Ranger killed by Indians during the War of 1812. Although many of the settlers to this area came from Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, the earliest settlement was made by the French at Cote Des Dessein.
