Originally published in 1925, this book presents a series of passages intended for translation by advanced students of German. The passages were chosen 'so as to afford as wide a range of style and vocabulary as possible' and cover a variety of German literature. With the exception of the last ten extracts, which give examples of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century German writers, all the authors represented wrote later than 1750.
