Die Wissenschaftlichen Sammlungen gehoren zum Leibniz-Institut fur Regionalentwicklung und Strukturplanung (IRS) in Erkner bei Berlin und bilden die grosste und wichtigste Spezialsammlung zum Bau- und Planungswesen in der DDR. Das Archiv ging aus dem ehemaligen Institut fur Stadtebau und Architektur (ISA), dem wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Institut der Bauakademie der DDR, hervor.
