Helen Keller had absolutely no hearing or eyesight from the age of two, but became one of the most inspiring and well known people to have ever lived. For a number of years she functioned, in her words, simply as "an unconscious clod of earth." Then quite suddenly, she experienced the impact of "another mind" within her own. Despite not knowing where it came from or how it got there, she awoke to a new awareness of being able to talk and listen with her hands. She learned to read and write, wrote at least ten books, and attended college. Her religion developed from living deeply within her...

Out of print for nearly a century, The World I Live In is Helen Keller's most personal and intellectually adventurous work--one that transforms our appreciation of her extraordinary achievements. Here this preternaturally gifted deaf and blind young woman closely describes her sensations and the workings of her imagination, while making the pro-vocative argument that the whole spectrum of the senses lies open to her through the medium of language. Standing in the line of the works of Emerson and Thoreau, The World I Live In is a profoundly suggestive exercise in self-invention,...

Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880. She was an American author, political activist and lecturer. When she was 19 months old she contracted what might have been scarlet fever or meningitis. Keller was blind and deaf from that point on. Her story was made world famous by the movie The Miracle Worker. The essays and poem in The World I Live In originally appeared in the Century Magazine. Although this book is autobiographical, it is also a description of how Ms Keller used her hands and the hands of others to experience her world.

Helen Keller's triumph over her blindness and deafness has become one of the most inspiring stories of our time. Here, in a book first published when she was young woman, is Helen Keller's own story complex, poignant, and filled with love. With unforgettable immediacy, Helen s own words reveal the heart of an exceptional woman, her struggles and joys, including that memorable moment when she finally understands that Anne s finger-spelled letters w-a-t-e-r mean the fluid rushing over her hand. Helen Keller was always a compassionate and witty advocate for the handicapped, and her sincere...

Helen Adams Keller was an American writer and social activist; an illness (possibly scarlet fever or meningitis) at the age of 19 months left her deaf and blind. No matter how dull, or how mean, or how wise a man is, he feels that happiness is his indisputable right. It is curious to observe what different ideals of happiness people cherish, and in what singular places they look for this well-spring of their life. Many look for it in the hoarding of riches, some in the pride of power, and others in the achievements of art and literature; a few seek it in the exploration of their own minds, or...
