The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895: Perceptions, Power, and Primacy Paine, S. C. M. 9780521617451 Cambridge University Press
The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895: Perceptions, Power, and Primacy

Paine, S. C. M.
This book examines the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-5, a significant event in world history virtually ignored in Western literature. Japan so rapidly defeated China that citizens of Europe suddenly perceived Japan, not only as the dominant power of Asia, but also as a key international player. Western disgust with Chinese military performance led to their rapidly growing intrusions on Chinese sovereignty while Japan soon became an ally of the ruling superpower, Great Britain. To the present day, China is still struggling to reverse the judgment of this war and restore its regional dominance.

Imperial Rivals: China, Russia and Their Disputed Frontier

Paine, Sarah C. M.
Based on archival research, this is a history of the Russo-Chinese border which examines Russia's expansion into the Asian heartland during the decades of Chinese decline and the 20th-century paradox of Russia's inability to sustain political and economic sway over its domains.

Nation Building, State Building, and Economic Development: Case Studies and Comparisons: Case Studies and Comparisons

Paine, Sarah C. M.
Why do some countries remain poor and dysfunctional while others thrive and become affluent? The expert contributors to this volume seek to identify reasons why prosperity has increased rapidly in some countries but not others by constructing and comparing cases. The case studies focus on the processes of nation building, state building, and economic development in comparably situated countries over the past hundred years. Part I considers the colonial legacy of India, Algeria, the Philippines, and Manchuria. In Part II, the analysis shifts to the anticolonial development strategies of Soviet...

The Wars for Asia, 1911-1949 S. C. M. Paine 9781107697478 Cambridge University Press
The Wars for Asia, 1911-1949

S. C. M. Paine
The Wars for Asia, 1911 1949 shows that the Western treatment of World War II, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Chinese Civil War as separate events misrepresents their overlapping connections and causes. The long Chinese Civil War precipitated a long regional war between China and Japan that went global in 1941 when the Chinese found themselves fighting a civil war within a regional war within an overarching global war. The global war that consumed Western attentions resulted from Japan's peripheral strategy to cut foreign aid to China by attacking Pearl Harbor and Western interests...

The Japanese Empire: Grand Strategy from the Meiji Restoration to the Pacific War S. C. M. Paine 9781107011953 Cambridge University Press
The Japanese Empire: Grand Strategy from the Meiji Restoration to the Pacific War

S. C. M. Paine
The Japanese experience of war from the late-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century presents a stunning example of the meteoric rise and shattering fall of a great power. As Japan modernized and became the one non-European great power, its leaders concluded that an empire on the Asian mainland required the containment of Russia. Japan won the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-5) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5) but became overextended in the Second Sino-Japanese War (1931-45), which escalated, with profound consequences, into World War II. A combination of incomplete institution building, an...
