This is a book for the modern-day seeker, a 'How-To' book with a bare-bones description of the techniques that lead to spiritual illumination and poetic insight; a no-nonsense guide shorn of any form of dogma, tradition, sectarianism or appeals to authority. Evelyn Underhill writes with conviction and clarity, leading the reader through such seemingly weighty concepts as contemplation, perception, concentration and surrender of the Self, while leavening the whole with welcome notes of humour and irony. This is an easy book to read and understand, and while the application of its principles...

June 10, 1923: It came over me vividly at Communion today, that the whole of the life of Christ consists and always has in nothing at all but giving himself--to everyone who asks--pleasant or not--dingy beasts like me--anyone--making no demands back, cultivating no heavenly joy for Himself--an eternal Risen Life of self-outpouring. It may sound obvious but when you see it, it's pretty overwhelming. Evelyn Underhill kept notebooks during her crucial mid-life years, while she was a successful writer and scholar. These private documents comprise one soul's journey in the life of the Spirit, yet...

The Cloud of Unknowing is an anonymous work of Christian mysticism written in the latter half of the 14th century. The text is a spiritual guide on contemplative prayer. The book counsels students to seek God through intense contemplation, motivated by love, and stripped of all thought. This is brought about by putting all thoughts and desires under a "cloud of forgetting", and thereby piercing Gods cloud of unknowing with a "dart of longing love" from the heart. This form of contemplation not directed by intellect, involves a spiritual union with God through the heart.

The Cloud of Unknowing draws on the mystical tradition of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite and Christian Neoplatonism, which focuses on the via negativa road to discovering God as a pure entity, beyond any capacity of mental conception and so without any definitive image or form. This tradition has reputedly inspired generations of mystical searchers from John Scotus Erigena, through Book of Taliesin, Nicholas of Cusa and St. John of the Cross to Teilhard de Chardin.

Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "Practical Mysticism is a work by one of the foremost 20th century Christian mystics, Evelyn Underhill. Her book, "Mysticism: A Study in the Nature and Development of Spiritual Consciousness," is the authoritative text of modern mysticism. This shorter work, "Practical Mysticism", is an abridged version of Underhills theology, and is a perfect starting point for immersion into the subject. It is written, to some extent, with non-Christians in mind, so Underhill is at her simplest here, yet her language...

Preface This little book, written during the last months of peace, goes to press in the first weeks of the great war. Many will feel that in such a time of conflict and horror, when only the most ignorant, disloyal, or apathetic can hope for quietness of mind, a book which deals with that which is called the "contemplative" attitude to existence is wholly out of place. So obvious, indeed, is this point of view, that I had at first thought of postponing its publication. On the one hand, it seems as though the dreams of a spiritual renaissance, which promised so fairly but a little time ago,...

John of Ruysbroeck Evelyn Underhill Brother Hermenegil
J AN VAN Ruysbroeck-three of whose most important works are here for the first time presented to English readers-is the greatest of the Flemish mystics, and must take high rank in any list of Christian contemplatives and saints. He was born in I273, at the little village of Ruysbroeck or Ruysbroeck between Brussels and Hal, from which he takes his name; and spent his whole life within his native province of Brabant. At eleven years old, he is said to have run away from home and found his way to Brussels where he was received by his uncle Jan Hinckaert, a canon of the Cathedral of 5t Gudule....
