John Jarvis began training in Kyokushin Karate in London during 1965 under Steve Arniel. He then trained for a year in 1967 in Tokyo under Masutatsu Oyama and qualified Third Dan. He became the branch chair for Australasia and the Pacific Islands. At this time he was promoted to Fifth Dan.
