Scripture Politics examines the central role played by Ulster Presbyterians in the birth of Irish republicanism. Ian McBride restores the United Irishmen to their eighteenth-century social context, restructuring a world where religious doctrine, political theory, and social antagonisms remained inextricably linked.

The years 1650-1850 saw the creation of the United Kingdom and its emergence as a world power. According to much recent literature--especially Linda Colley's Britons--Protestantism was central to this process, giving the British a sense of uniqueness, unity and imperial destiny. This collection of essays examines and challenges this religious contribution to "Britishness" and suggests radical new ways to understand the "British problem" and British and Irish development during the "long eighteenth century."

This volume addresses a subject of vital importance to the study of Irish history--literature and politics. Although collective memory and commemoration has attracted much attention from British, French and American scholars, this is the first major study of the relationship between history and memory in Ireland--closing a remarkable gap in the literature, considering the frequency with which Unionists as well as nationalists have invoked the past, erected monuments and observed anniversaries. This book helps define the main concepts and issues in an emerging field of inquiry.
