The First International Congress of the International Society for Analysis, its Applications and Computations (ISAAC'97) was held at the University of Delaware from 3 to 7 June 1997. As specified in the invitation of the President Professor Robert P. Gilbert of the ISAAC, we organized the session on Reproducing Kerneis and Their Applications. In our session, we presented 24 engaging talks on topics of current interest to the research community. As suggested and organized by Professor Gilbert, we hereby publish its Proceedings. Rather than restricting the papers to Congress participants, we...

20. Pattern recognition and statistical learning theory (the theory of support vector machines). See 40], 58]. In this last volume we refer in particular to the papers 63] and 64]. Since this topic is maybe less known to the operator theory community we mention that the support vector method is a general approach to function estimation problems. See 63, p. 26]. We note that the above list and the given references are by no way exhaustive. We refer to the first section of the paper of S. Saitoh in the present volume for another (and mainly different) list of topics where reproducing...

Schur analysis originates with a 1917 paper by Schur where he associated to a function analytic and contractive in the open unit disk a sequence, finite or infinite, of numbers in the open unit disk, called Schur coefficients. In signal processing, they are often called reflection coefficients. Under the word "Schur analysis" one encounters a variety of problems related to Schur functions such as interpolation problems, moment problems, study of the relationships between the Schur coefficients and the properties of the function, study of underlying operators and others.

Thisvolumeofthe Operator Theory: Advances and Applications series (OTAA) isthe ?rst volume of a new subseries. This subseries is dedicated to connections between the theory of linear operators and the mathematical theory of linear systems and is named Linear Operators and Linear Systems (LOLS).Asthe- isting subseries Advances in Partial Di?erential Equations (ADPE), the new s- series will continue the traditions of the OTAA series and keep the high quality of the volumes. The editors of the new subseries are: Daniel Alpay (Beer Sheva, - rael), Joseph Ball (Blacksburg, Virginia, USA) and Andr...

From a mathematical point of view it is fascinating to realize that most, if not all, of the notions arising from the theory of analytic functions in the open unit disk have counterparts when one replaces the integers by the nodes of a homogeneous tree. It is also fascinating to realize that a whole function theory, different from the classical theory of several complex variables, can be developped when one considers hypercomplex (Clifford) variables, Fueter polynomials and the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya product, in place of the classical polynomials in three independent variables. This volume...

This volume contains six peer-refereed articles written on the occasion of the workshop Operator theory, system theory and scattering theory: multidimensional generalizations and related topics, held at the Department of Mathematics of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in June, 2005. The book will interest a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians, electrical engineers and theoretical physicists.

The notions of transfer function and characteristic functions proved to be fundamental in the last fifty years in operator theory and in system theory. Moshe Livsic played a central role in developing these notions, and the book contains a selection of carefully chosen refereed papers dedicated to his memory. Topics include classical operator theory, ergodic theory and stochastic processes, geometry of smooth mappings, mathematical physics, Schur analysis and system theory. The variety of topics attests well to the breadth of Moshe Livsic's mathematical vision and the deep impact of his...

This volume presents the refereed proceedings of the Conference in Operator The- ory in Honour of Moshe Livsic 80th Birthday, held June 29 to July 4, 1997, at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Beer-Sheva, Israel) and at the Weizmann In- stitute of Science (Rehovot, Israel). The volume contains papers in operator theory and its applications (understood in a very wide sense), many of them reflecting, 1 directly or indirectly, a profound impact of the work of Moshe Livsic. Moshe (Mikhail Samuilovich) Livsic was born on July 4, 1917, in the small town of Pokotilova near Uman, in the...

Generalized Schur functions are scalar- or operator-valued holomorphic functions such that certain associated kernels have a finite number of negative squares. This book develops the realization theory of such functions as characteristic functions of coisometric, isometric, and unitary colligations whose state spaces are reproduced kernal Pontryagin spaces. This provides a modern system theory setting for the relationship between invariant subspaces and factorization, operator models, Krein-Langer factorizations, and other topics. This text is intended for students and researchers in...
