Mathematics is essential to the study and understanding of biochemistr y yet most undergraduates do not have a grasp of maths. This book sets out all the mathematics needed for an undergraduate course in biochem istry, assuming a minimum of prior knowledge. Emphasis is placed on to pics necessary for biochemists and all the examples are relevant to bi ochemistry. Each chapter contains illustrative boxes and worked exampl es and also a problem section (the answers are given in the back of th e book).

THIS BOOK collects together papers given at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held at Il Ciocco (Lucca), Italy, from the 9th to the 15th April, 1989. It sets out to present the current state of understanding of the principles governing the way fluxes and concentrations are maintained and controlled in metabolic systems. Although this is a topic that has held the interest of biochemists for many years, it is only quite recently that the methods of analysing the kinetics of multi-enzyme pathways developed over the past two decades have come to be widely discussed or applied experimentally. Many...

Two decades have passed since the mechanisms of protein synthesis became well enough understood to permit the genetic modification oforganisms. An impressive amount of new knowledge has emerged from the new technology, but much ofthe promise of20years ago has notyet been fulfilled. In biotechnology, efforts to increase the yields of commercially valuable metabolites have been less successful than ex- pected, and when they have succeeded it has often been as much from selective breeding as from new methods. The cell is more complicated than what is presented in the classical teaching of...

Some teachers of biochemistry think it positively beneficial for students to struggle with difficult mathematics. I do not number myself among these people, although I have derived much personal pleasure from the study of mathematics and from applying it to problems that interest me in biochemistry. On the contrary, I think that students choose courses in biochemistry out of interest in biochemistry and that they should not be encumbered with more mathematics than is absolutely required for a proper understanding of biochemistry. This of course includes physical chemistry, because a...

Biochemical Evolution: The Pursuit of Perfection, Second Edition by Athel Cornish-Bowden describes the relationship between biochemistry and evolutionary biology, arguing that each depends on the other to be properly understood. There are many aspects of evolution that make sense only in the light of biochemical knowledge, just as there are many aspects of biochemistry that make sense only in the light of evolution.
