This is the sixth volume in a series of books devoted to the history, documentation, and analysis of music in Asia. This volume represents the first in the series to be dedicated to the music of East Asia. Although more narrowly focused than previous volumes, the essays in the present volume continue the tradition established by Laurence Picken of publishing studies of musical documents from the field of Asian music and studies of sound-producing devices and musical instruments.
