During the past fifty years immigrants from 160 nations have transformed Sweden from an ethnically relatively homogeneous society into an intensely multi-ethnic one. By the beginning of the 1990s, more than one million out of a population of eight and a half million were immigrants or children of immigrants. By the early 1990s some ten percent of the Swedish population are foreign born. This change in Swedish life and culture results in considerable tension and misunderstandings.
