Pierre Loti (pseudonym of Louis Marie-Julien Viaud; 14 January 1850 - 10 June 1923) was a French naval officer and novelist, known for his exotic novels.

Auf der Rückreise von Indien, wo er ein Kommando gehabthatte, ging Louis Marie Julien Viaud in der am Persischen Golf gelegenen Hafenstadt Bandar Bushehr an Land und trat am 17. April 1900 mit einer Begleitkarawane eine Reise zu Pferd durch das vormoderne Persien zur Zeit der Herrschaft von Muzaffar ad-Din Schah (1896-1907) an. Die Reise führte ihn über Shiraz, Isfahan ab hier in einer Kutsche und Teheran bis nach Bandar Anzali am Kaspischen Meer, wo er am 6. Juni desselben Jahres eintraf.
