Wahrend die Zahl und die Starke der Erdbeben und damit die von ihnen ausgehende Gefahr auf dem Planet Erde im Mittel uber die vergangenen Jahrhunderte und auch heute unverandert ist, nimmt doch das Risiko des Schadens durch Erdbeben z.Zt. stark zu. Besonders die anwachsende Konzentration der Bevolkerung und die Werte in Gebieten, die von Erdbeben betroffen sind, fuhrt bei gleichbleibender Gefahrdung zu exponentiell anwachsenden Schaden.
