Originally published in 1919, this novel set in Edwardian London examines the lives and relationships of two women, Katharine Hilbery and Mary Datchet. The contrast is illuminated by the differences between Katharine and Mary and the lives they seek. Katharine is privileged and comes from a literary background (her father was a poet), though her passion is for mathematics and astronomy. Meanwhile, Mary has a cause--to fight for women's suffrage. Can these two women find love and fulfillment or are their lives as different as night and day?

It is around these suppressed chapters from "The Possessed" that the dark legend of Dostoevsky as a Marquis de Sade has grown. Know by hearsay and magnified by rumor, Stavrogins confession to the sexual abuse of a child has been considered by such biographers as Gide and Zweig to be as much the confession of the author as of his fictional character. Brilliantly translated by Virginia Woolf and S.S. Koteliansky, it is published here for the first time in the U.S. Also...

Jacob is presented in glimpses, in fragments, as Woolf breaks down traditional ways of representing character and experience. And the backdrop is the tragedy that was the Great War. Check out...
