Over three centuries ago, the Dutch colonized a large portion of the northeastern United States. This area, called New Netherland, included New York, New Jersey, Delaware, most of Connecticut, and some of Pennsylvania. The fur trade drove a frontier economy. New Netherland was far removed from the political disputes of Europe, but not immune to the consequences that ensued.
