Yet although his surviving letters are those of a busy man, and many are perfunctory responses or requests, they remain of considerable interest to the reader. This is the first edition of letters by Reynolds to be published since 1929. Since that date the number of known letters has almost doubled. The new volume contains a total of 308 letters by the artist...

Joshua Reynolds dominated the British art scene during the middle and late 1700's. His painings and teaching led the change in British art from anecdotal pictures to the more formal continental Grand Style. Reynolds was the first president of the Royal Academy and was knighted for his work by George III. During his time at the Royal Academy his yearly discourses gave a sense of his aspirations and thoughts on the changing art scene. His advice to the young painter mirrors his own difficulties with line verses colo, r and public and private portraiture

Reynolds took his role as president and fellow of the Royal Academy very seriously, delivering fifteen 'discourses' to the fellows and students of the Academy, which are collected in Volume 1,...
