Diese erstmals 1933 veröffentlichte Arbeit ist ein Grund- und Begründungstext soziographischer Forschung. Ihr Ziel war es, mit den Mitteln moderner Erhebungsmethoden ein Bild von der psychologischen Situation einer Arbeitslosenpopulation (Marienthal in Niederösterreich) zu gewinnen. Zwei Aufgaben mußten gelöst werden - eine inhaltliche: zum Problem der Arbeitslosigkeit Material beizutragen, und eine methodische: einen sozialpsychologischen Tatbestand umfassend darzustellen.
