Exploring the solid state chemical changes which have taken place in the upper regions of the Earth during its long history, this study reviews thermodynamics as applied to common rock-forming minerals and mineral associations, and provides a classification of mineral equilibria, examining representative natural and experimental examples of different types. There is also a review of the kinetics of reactions involving crystals and an examination of the granular microstructure of natural samples together with chemical data.
