Fear, shame, and secrecy enshroud victims of physical and sexual abuse. In the 1950s, society offered few means of escape for women and children. Many victims stayed silent.

Such is the case for Sarah Garvey and her three children. After marrying Hugh and giving birth to two girls and a boy, Sarah sees Hugh's true colors. He goes on violent rampages, fueled by alcohol. Embarrassed by the horrible beatings, she keeps quiet. Her children face similar abuse and shame. When Sarah finally learns the awful truth, the damage to her family has been done.
