For centuries river channels have been modified by a variety of engineering methods for the purposes of flood control, land drainage, navigation and the prevention of erosion. The principal aim of this book is to make river managers aware of the environmental constraints and opportunities entailed in engineering designs, with the aid of worldwide examples. It is demonstrated that fluvial geomorphology can be useful in designing more natural channels.
