This volume (I of II) is a republish of the SIXTH EDITION published in 1889 which incorporates all inaccuracies or additional information discovered by Mr. Bancroft since the FIRST EDITION was published in 1882. We have attempted to accurately duplicate the original publisher's format, language, phrasing and spelling.
