Craft Specialization and Social Evolution In Memory of V. Gordon Childe Edited by Bernard Wailes V. Gordon Childe was the first scholar to attempt a broad and sustained socioeconomic analysis of the archaeology of the ancient world in terms that, today, could be called explanatory. To most, he was remembered only as a diligent synthesizer whose whole interpretation collapsed when its chronology was demolished. There was little recognition of his insistence that the emergence of craft specialists, and their very variable roles in the relations of production, were crucial to an understanding of...

This volume presents the complex evolutionary history of an ancient town, Tepe Gawra, located in present-day northeastern Iraq, over a thousand-year period, from the Terminal Ubaid period to the Late Chalcolithic or Uruk period, during the fourth millennium B.C. The site itself is a linchpin for the chronology and study of evolutionary trends.
In examining Gawra's transformation, Mitchell S. Rothman analyzes local processes of change and the connection between changes at this small town and transformations of the general Mesopotamian region--southwestern Iran, the western Zagros, the...

This integration of earlier and new scholarship reconceptualizes the origins of civilization, challenging the received view that the ancient Near East spawned the spread of civilization outward from Mesopotamia to all other neighboring cultures. Central Asia is here shown to have been a major player in the development of cities.
Skillfully documenting the different phases of both Soviet and earlier Western external analyses along with recent excavation results, this new interpretation reveals Central Asia's role in the socioeconomic and political processes linked to both the Iranian...

Data gathered through systematic survey detail the settlement history of the Vrokastro region from the Final Neolithic period through the early part of the twentieth century. Each period is introduced by an environmental pattern for the settlement, with a brief summary of project methodology and goals, a description of the regional topography and botany, and a synopsis of the regional topography and hydrology. The penultimate chapter and conclusions present a summary of the regional settlement history, growth, demographics, and a prospectus concerning future work in the Vrokastro...

G. M. FitzGerald's Deep Cut at Beth Shan, a large-scale research project in the southern Levant, is a window to the earliest civilization at this major tell, documenting human activity during the Neolithic and Bronze Age. In 1933, his last season excavating at Beth Shan, FitzGerald gave us a preliminary picture of a series of late prehistoric events that reflects the chronological progression of cultures within the region. His pioneering research effort left us with a tantalizing but incomplete story.
In 1998, Eliot Braun researched FitzGerald's field notes at the University of...

The original publication of the 114 seals and seal impressions excavated from Gordion in Turkey, this book is the first diachronic monograph on the ongoing excavations at Gordion and provides the first historical and archaeological overview of the entire site, with the most recent archaeological developments taken fully into account. The seals range in date from ca. 1800 BCE to 400 CE, from the Early Bronze Age through the Roman period, covering some of the most tumultuous and most interesting eras of Anatolian history.
Dusinberre offers insights into the individuals living at...

The site of Dun Ailinne is one of four major ritual sites from the Irish Iron Age, each said to form the center of a political kingdom and thus described as "royal." Excavation has produced artifacts ranging from the Neolithic (about 5,000 years ago) through the later Iron Age (fourth century CE), when the site was the focus of repeated rituals, probably related to the creation and maintenance of political hegemony. A series of timber structures were built and replaced as each group of leaders sought to claim ancient descent from a deep past and still create something unique and...

This report presents the new excavations at Combe-Capelle Bas, a Middle Paleolithic site in southern France. The site is situated directly on a source of good quality flint, and recent theories suggest that such a setting may have certain predictable effects on the lithic industries. These effects, and others relating to current models of raw material procurement and use, are discussed.
This book will appeal to anyone interested in Paleolithic archaeology, lithic analysis, raw material use, and site formation and taphonomy.

Lang Rongrien Rockshelter was the first site excavated in Thailand to produce a clearly stratified, charcoal-dated late Pleistocene deposit beneath a well-defined Early Holocene Hoabinhian deposit. This volume presents in detail the excavations at Lang Rongrien Rockshelter in the mid-1980s. Anderson uses the evidence excavated as a starting point to reevaluate several issues with respect to Pleistocene/Early Holocene human habitation in Southeast Asia.
