This book focuses on the performance of mobile robots through the use of multi-hierarchical symbolic representations of the environment.
To perform deliberative actions, a robot must possess some symbolic representation of its workspace, but representations of real environments can become so large that they must be conveniently arranged to facilitate and, in some cases, make possible their use. Practical solutions tested on real robots, for example a robotic wheelchair, are provided.
This book focuses on the performance of mobile robots through the use of multi-hierarchical symbolic representations of the environment.
Technology is taking us to a world where myriads of heavily networked devices interact with the physical world in multiple ways and at multiple scales, from the global Internet down to micro and nano devices. Many of these devices are highly mobile and must adapt to the surrounding environment in a totally unsupervised way.
A fundamental research challenge is the design of robust decentralized computing systems that are capable of operating under changing environments and noisy input, and yet exhibit the desired behavior and response time, under constraints such as energy...

Innovations in Intelligent Machines is a very timely volume that takes a fresh look on the recent attempts of instilling human-like intelligence into computer-controlled devices. By contrast to the machine intelligence research of the last two decades, the recent work in this area recognises explicitly the fact that human intelligence is not purely computational but that it also has an element of empirical validation (interaction with the environment). Also, recent research recognises that human intelligence does not always prevent one from making errors but it equips one with the ability to...

The evolution of technologies has greatly changed the basic structure of our industry and nature of our daily lives. Industries which did not exist several decades ago have made remarkable progress in recent years and ?ourished. One of the most typical examples is the computer game industry. This book presents a sample of the most recent research concerning the application of computational intelligence techniques and internet technology in computer games. This book contains eight chapters. The ?rst chapter, by N. Baba and H. Handa, is on utilization of evolutionary algorithms to increase...

The human brain possesses the remarkable capability of understanding, - terpreting, and producing human language, thereby relying mostly on the left hemisphere. The ability to acquire language is innate as can be seen from d- orders such as speci?c language impairment (SLI), which manifests itself in a missing sense for grammaticality. Language exhibits strong compositionality and structure. Hence biological neural networks are naturally connected to processing and generation of high-level symbolic structures. Unlike their biological counterparts, arti?cial neural networks and logic do not...

This is the first book treating the fields of supervised, semi-supervised and unsupervised machine learning collectively. The book presents both the theory and the algorithms for mining huge data sets using support vector machines (SVMs) in an iterative way. It demonstrates how kernel based SVMs can be used for dimensionality reduction and shows the similarities and differences between the two most popular unsupervised techniques.

Intelligent computing is becoming a mature ?eld of information and communication technology, covering a hybrid palette of methods and techniques derived from clas- cal arti?cial intelligence, computational intelligence, multi-agent systems etc. Int- ligent computing is generally known to be computationally intensive from the point of view of resources required: time, memory, bandwidth. As such high resource c- sumption is one of its main drawbacks, distributed computing is expected to give an impetus to its practical utilization. Moreover, intelligent techniques have also proved their...

This book is loaded with examples in which computer scientists and engineers have used evolutionary computation - programs that mimic natural evolution - to solve many real-world problems. They aren't abstract, mathematically intensive papers, but accounts of solving important problems, including tips from the authors on how to avoid common pitfalls, maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the search process, and many other practical suggestions.

We describe in this book, new methods for building intelligent systems using type-2 fuzzy logic and soft computing techniques. Soft Computing (SC) consists of several computing paradigms, including type-1 fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algorithms, which can be used to create powerful hybrid intelligent systems. In this book, we are extending the use of fuzzy logic to a higher order, which is called type-2 fuzzy logic. Combining type-2 fuzzy logic with traditional SC techniques, we can build powerful hybrid intelligent systems that can use the advantages that each te- nique offers....

Realizing the growing importance of semantic adaptation and personalization of media, the editors of this book brought together leading researchers and practitioners of the field to discuss the state-of-the-art, and explore emerging exciting developments. This volume comprises extended versions of selected papers presented at the 1st International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization (SMAP 2006), which took place in Athens in December 2006.
