The imperial counselor, polymath, and writer Michael Psellos (1018-ca. 1076) portrays the rulers of Byzantium from Basil II to Michael VII, and, along the way, provides an extensive account of his own role and life.

Die Schrift Peri hermeneias (De interpretatione) nimmt unter den logischen Schriften des Aristoteles einen bedeutenden Platz ein, ist aber an vielen Stellen nicht leicht zu verstehen. Die Aeneis Vergils, den man "Vater des Abendlandes" nannte, gehort zu den bedeutendsten Dichtungen der Weltliteratur. In dem um 18 v. Chr. veroffentlichten Epos werden die mythischen Voraussetzungen fur die Grundung Roms erzahlt. Die Ubersetzung ist metrisch, verwendet also wie das Original den Hexameter, steht aber sprachlich nicht mehr in klassizistischer Tradition, sondern gibt den lateinischen Text im Deutsch der Gegenwart wieder.
