Die Aeneis Vergils, den man "Vater des Abendlandes" nannte, gehort zu den bedeutendsten Dichtungen der Weltliteratur. In dem um 18 v. Chr. veroffentlichten Epos werden die mythischen Voraussetzungen fur die Grundung Roms erzahlt. Die Ubersetzung ist metrisch, verwendet also wie das Original den Hexameter, steht aber sprachlich nicht mehr in klassizistischer Tradition, sondern gibt den lateinischen Text im Deutsch der Gegenwart wieder.
