Testing concrete while construction is underway enables decisions to be made which can improve the quality of the finished structure. The book covers testing and measuring techniques for fresh concrete and concrete during the first few days after placing, and for reinforcement and prestressing tendons. Many examples are given of practical methods which can be applied directly during concrete construction to improve quality. It forms the Proceedings of the International RILEM Workshop in Mainz, Germany, March 1990.

With current moves towards international harmonization, there is a need for rationalization and standardization of test procedures and interpretation of test results in many fields. Testing of metals for use in structures, particularly steel and aluminium, is a subject where information on these aspects is generally lacking. In response to this, RILEM (The International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and Structures) organized an international workshop to identify need in testing metals.

Concrete durability in climates where freezing and thawing occurs is a continuing problem. It is particularly acute for highway and bridge structures, where de-icing salts are used to combat the effects of frost, snow and ice. These salts can cause damage to concrete and accelerate corrosion of reinforcements. This book presents the latest international research on this area, with contributions from North America and Europe which were presented at an international RILEM workshop.

Practical production of ordinary and special, high performance concretes and their behaviour and properties when fresh are the main themes of this book. It derives from the International RILEM Conference held in Paisley, Scotland in June 1996, and represents the culmination of the work of two RILEM Technical Committees (145 WSM Workability of Special Mixes, and 150 ECM Efficiency of Concrete Mixers).

It summarizes the conclusions of the technical committee's investigations into the resistance of concrete to freeze-thaw attack with or without de-icing chemicals. It presents the RILEM recommendations on testing the freeze-thaw and de-icing salt resistance of concrete.
