Diese Monographie beleuchtet die Entstehung und Entwicklung der psychiatrischen Fachsprache aus sprachwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Thematisiert wird der Zeitraum von der Grundung der ersten Psychiatrien um 1800 uber die Konsolidierung der akademischen Psychiatrie zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts bis hin zum psychiatrischen Sprachgebrauch in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Anhand von Fallstudien, die auf der Auswertung eines umfangreichen Quellenmaterials basieren, wird die Entwicklung des Fachwortschatzes, der Fachtextsorten sowie des fachspezifischen Stils dargestellt.

Was sind die einfachen Bausteine der Sprache? Welchen Kategorien lassen sie sich zuordnen und aufgrund welcher Kriterien? Welche Funktion haben Wortarten bzw. lexikalische Kategorien fur die Sprecher einer Sprache? Die Studie gibt Antworten auf diese theoretischen Fragen. Sie zeigt am Beispiel des Deutschen, dass lexikalische Kategorisierung kognitiv und funktional bedingt ist und nicht etwa eine statische Struktur, sondern einen dynamischen Prozess darstellt. Here this phenomenon is explored: A pragmatic theory of text-image relationships is developed and empirically tested on the example of print media reports about terrorism in the FRG during the 1970s. Carl Vogt's quarrel with Rudolph Wagner is considered to be a culmination of the materialism dispute in the 19th century. Out of this basically academic issue on the nature of human mental functions, a personal dispute quickly developed which was unrivalled in thematic incisiveness and expression. The aim of this study is the detailed linguistic analysis of the polemics and argumentation in this dispute based on extensive text excerpts, in which for the first time detailed linguistic studies on Vogt and Wagner are presented.
