Water has become one of the potential targets of terrorists. This volume addresses the basic scientific concepts that must be integrated by decision-makers to minimize damages and optimize recovery operations in the aftermath of such an attack. It addresses the multidisciplinary approaches for rapid diagnoses and assessments, and offers a step-by-step treatment of all aspects of ecosystem processes, modelling and monitoring.

The chapters in this volume were presented at the July August 2006 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Imaging for Detection and Identi?cation. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glo- ous Tuscany region of northern Italy. For the eighth time we gathered at this idyllicspottoexploreandextendthereciprocitybetweenmathematicsand- gineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usually disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied sci- tists which occurred at our seven previous ASI s continued at this meeting. The...

Although the end of the Cold War has paved the way to a substantial demilitarisation and conversion, the leftovers of this process such as former military installations, military training areas, and huge quantities of unserviceable ammunition and equipment still pose a severe threat to the environment of both NATO and Partner countries.
The rehabilitation of these areas for civilian uses is extremely costly and is generally in the short and medium term not possible. For this reason, the development of new methods for the estimation avoidance of risks should receive special priority....

There is currently ever pressing need to provide a critical assessment of the current knowledge and indicate new challenges which are brought by the present time in fighting the man-made and natural hazards in transient analysis of structures. The latter concerns both the permanently fixed structures, such as those built to protect the people and/or sensitive storage material (e. g. military installations) or the special structures found in transportation systems (e. g. bridges, tunnels), and the moving structures (such as trains, plains, ships or cars). The present threat of the terrorist...

A NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Brilliant Light Facilities and Research in Life and Material Sciences was held from July 17 to July 21, 2006. The workshop was hosted by the Center for the Advancement of Natural Discoveries using Light Emission, Yerevan - the newly established institute in Armenia with the aim to create a synchrotron radiation facility, CANDLE, as an international laboratory for advanced research in life and material sciences. About 50 researchers from NATO, partner countries and Armenia gathered at Yerevan to discuss modern trends in developments of advanced light...
