In general, combustion is a spatially three-dimensional, highly complex physi co-chemical process oftransient nature. Models are therefore needed that sim to such a degree that it becomes amenable plify a given combustion problem to theoretical or numerical analysis but that are not so restrictive as to distort the underlying physics or chemistry. In particular, in view of worldwide efforts to conserve energy and to control pollutant formation, models of combustion chemistry are needed that are sufficiently accurate to allow confident predic tions of flame structures. Reduced kinetic...

The study of the magnetic fields of the Earth and Sun, as well as those of other planets, stars, and galaxies, has a long history and a rich and varied literature, including in recent years a number of review articles and books dedicated to the dynamo theories of these fields. Against this background of work, some explanation of the scope and purpose of the present monograph, and of the presentation and organization of the material, is therefore needed. Dynamo theory offers an explanation of natural magnetism as a phenomenon of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), the dynamics governing the evolution...

The nine review articles in this book give a fairly complete survey of the applications of fractals to astronomical and astrophysical problems. The book is self-contained and written with the particular aim of teaching graduate students how to apply fractal geometry to new problems. After ageneral introduction to the basic concepts, applications are given to astrophysical dynamical systems, to strange attractors of stellar pulsations, to the solar granular pattern, and to both the large-scale structure of the universe - a central theme of the book - and to astronomical data analysis.

This book originated from a course given at the Univcrsidad Aut6noma of Madrid in the Spring of 1994 and in the Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 1995. The goal of these courses is to give the non-specialist an introduction to some old and new ideas in the field of strongly correlated systems, in particular the problems posed by the high-1 superconducting materials. As theoretical physicists, our starting viewpoint to address the problem of strongly correlat ed ferlnion systems and related issues of modern condensed matter physics .is the renormalization group approach applied both to...

The authors present a theoretical and numerical study of anisotropic high-temperature materials using techniques of muon spin rotation spectroscopy. Using the London theory, the method obtains information on the microscopic magnetic fields in the probe. The muon spin rotation technique is presented in some detail, especially the muon behaviour in magnetic fields. The authors then describe the superconductor and present a prescription for numerical calculations of the fields. These in turn are used to develop numerical simulations of muon stopping in superconductors. The results are presented...

The investigation ofmost problems of quantum physics leads to the solution of the Schrodinger equation with an appropriate interaction Hamiltonian or potential. However, the exact solutions are known for rather a restricted set of potentials, so that the standard eternal problem that faces us is to find the best effective approximation to the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation under consideration. In the most general form, this problem can be formulated as follows. Let a total Hamiltonian H describing a relativistic (quantum field theory) or a nonrelativistic (quantum mechanics)...

At the time I learned quantum field theory it was considered a folk theo rem that it is easy to construct field theories fulfilling either the locality or the spectrum condition. The construction of an example for the latter case is particularly easy. Take for instance an irreducible representation of the Poincare group with positive energy, and as an algebra of observables all compact operators in that representation space. This algebra of observables is even an asymptotically Abelian algebra. Since it has only a single repre sentation - except for multiples of this one - it is hardly...

This book is aimed at theoretical and mathematical physicists and mathematicians interested in modern gravitational physics. I have thus tried to use language familiar to readers working on classical and quantum gravity, paying attention both to difficult calculations and to existence theorems, and discussing in detail the current literature. The first aim of the book is to describe recent work on the problem of boundary conditions in one-loop quantum cosmology. The motivation of this research was to under stand whether supersymmetric theories are one-loop finite in the presence of...

The author considers meteorology as a part of fluid dynamics. He tries to derive the properties of atmospheric flows from a rational analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations, at the same time analyzing various types of initial and boundary problems. This approach to simulate nature by models from fluid dynamics will be of interest to both scientists and students of physics and theoretical meteorology.
