In order to obtain more reliable optimal solutions of concrete technical/economic problems, e.g. optimal design problems, the often known stochastic variations of many technical/economic parameters have to be taken into account already in the planning phase. Hence, ordinary mathematical programs have to be replaced by appropriate stochastic programs. New theoretical insight into several branches of reliability-oriented optimization of stochastic systems, new computational approaches and technical/economic applications of stochastic programming methods can be found in this volume.

This monograph is devoted to a rigorous presentation of results about the representation of preference orderings by real-valued order isomorphisms (utility functions). The authors have gathered together, from sources scattered throughout a wide range of the literature of mathematics and economics, the most significant theorems and methods in their field. The book will be a valuable resource for theoretical economists, mathematicians, and all interested in partial orders and their representation. It could also be used as the text for an advanced graduate course in mathematical economics.

Simplicial methods have yielded recent contributions towards solutions to a system of nonlinear equations. This monograph describes recent developments, including the D1-triangulation and its application to simplicial methods.

The papers collected in this volume are contributions to T.I.Tech./K.E.S. Conference on Nonlinear and Convex Analysis in Economic Theory, which was held at Keio University, July 2-4, 1993. The conference was organized by Tokyo Institute of Technology (T. I. Tech.) and the Keio Economic Society (K. E. S.), and supported by Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc .. A lot of economic problems can be formulated as constrained optimiza- tions and equilibrations of their solutions. Nonlinear-convex analysis has been supplying economists with indispensable mathematical machineries for these problems arising in...

These notes originate from a couple of lectures which were given in the Econometric Workshop of the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE) at the Catholic University of Louvain. The participants of the seminars were recommended to read the first four chapters of Seber's book 40], but the exposition of the material went beyond Seber's exposition, if it seemed necessary. Coordinate-free methods are not new in Gauss-Markov estimation, besides Seber the work of Kolmogorov 11], SCheffe 36], Kruskal 21], 22] and Malinvaud 25], 26] should be mentioned. Malinvaud's approach...

1 1. Statement of the problem. Bayes' theorem provides a very powerful tool for statistical inference, especially when pooling information from different sources is appropriate. Thus, prior information resulting from economic theory and/or from previous (real or hypothetical) samples can be combined with the information embodied in new observations; and this operation can be performed formally, within a rigorous mathematical framework. To introduce the Bayesian analysis of the simultaneous equations model, we shall base our presentation in the very convenient exposition given by Dreze in his...

These notes are the result of an interrupted sequence of seminars on optimiza tion theory with economic applications starting in 1964-1965. This is mentioned by way of explaining the uneven style that pervades them. Lately I have been using the notes for a two semester course on the subject for graduate students in economics. Except for the introductory survey, the notes are intended to provide an appetizer to more sophisticated aspects of optimization theory and economic theory. The notes are divided into three parts. Part I collects most of the results on constrained extremf of...

The theory of scheduling is receiving increased emphasis in research and practice for at least three good reasons. F t, the management of large scale projects resolves itself, in the final analysis, into problems of scheduling interacting activities subject to limited resources. Second, a great deal of "fat" that used to exist in the past in production, distribution, and service systems is eliminated, thanks to tighter managerial controls in information systems, in financial management, in logistics, and in many other facets of industrial enterprises and military installations. Tighter...
