Some 700 species of wildflower are described, with common and scientific names given throughout. The book focuses on the more showy native and naturalized herbaceous plants of woods, fields, wetlands and parks. There is a general description of the geology of the area, with a description of the plants various habitats and the effects of seasonal changes and topographical variations in climate.
