This volume contains fourteen papers on mathematical problems of flow and transport through porous media presented at the conference held at Oberwolfach, June 21-27, 1992. Among the topics covered are miscible and immiscible displacement, groundwater contamination, reaction-diffusion instabilities and moving boundaries, random and fractal media, microstructure models, homogenization, spatial heterogeneties, inverse problems, degenerate equations. The papers deal with aspects of modelling, mathematical theory, numerical methods and applications in the engineering sciences.

The present book summarizes parts of the research made in the Norwegian Multispecies program. This program was initiated by the then Norwegian Council of Fisheries Research, which was later integrated in The Research Council of Norway. Modelling has been a key element in the program. In the first place, modelling, be it singlespecies or multispecies modelling, is an efficient way of summing up existing knowledge, and performing analyses of different types on the basis of it. Further more, models may serve as a meeting ground between fishery researchers from differ ent academic fields. This...

Inequalities arise as an essential component in various mathematical areas. Besides forming a highly important collection of tools, e.g. for proving analytic or stochastic theorems or for deriving error estimates in numerical mathematics, they constitute a challenging research field of their own. Inequalities also appear directly in mathematical models for applications in science, engineering, and economics.
This edited volume covers divers aspects of this fascinating field. It addresses classical inequalities related to means or to convexity as well as inequalities arising...

New trends in free boundary problems and new mathematical tools together with broadening areas of applications have led to attempts at presenting the state of art of the field in a unified way. In this monograph we focus on formal models representing contact problems for elastic and elastoplastic plates and shells. New approaches open up new fields for research. For example, in crack theory a systematic treatment of mathematical modelling and optimization of problems with cracks is required. Similarly, sensitivity analysis of solutions to problems subjected to perturbations, which forms an...
