Complicating Categories: Gender, Class, Race, and Ethnicity

Eileen Boris; Angelique Janssens
This volume deals with the question of inequality through race, class and gender. Most studies only concern themselves with either class and gender, or with the combination of race or gender. What happens if we throw all three concepts into the analysis? The volume seeks to explore how race, class and gender are interrelated in the study of topics such as social transformation, national identity, sexuality and work. The volume should be of interest to both students and scholars in gender and race studies, labor history, sociology, history, non-Western history.

Peripheral Labour: Studies in the History of Partial Proletarianization

Shahid Amin; Marcel van der Linden
The contributors to this volume suggest that the idea of a "pure" working class should be reconsidered and examine specific South Asian and Latin American case studies. A large part of the working class in the so-called third world and also in the main capitalist countries is either free (but coerced through noneconomic means) or does hidden work (e.g. as formally self-employed producers). By rethinking the fundamental assumptions of "classical" labor and working-class history, the volume contributes to the development of a noneurocentric historiography.

The End of Labour History?

The essays in this 1994 book aim to integrate labour history within the broader discipline of social history and to demonstrate the continuing vitality and validity of the sub-discipline. Each essay is in itself a response to criticisms of the ways in which labour historians have approached their subjects.

Globalization, Environmental Change, and Social History

Peter Boomgaard; Marjolein 'T Hart
Throughout all ages, the activities of mankind have weighed heavily upon the environment. In turn, changes in that environment have favoured the rise of certain social groups and limited the actions of others. Despite this, environmental history has remained a blind spot for most social and economic historians. This is to be regretted, as the various and unequal effects of environmental change often explain the strengths and weaknesses of certain social groups, irrespective of their being defined along the lines of class, gender and ethnicity. This volume brings together the expertise of...

Labour in Transport: Histories from the Global South, C.1750-1950

Stefano Bellucci; Larissa Rosa Correa; Jan-Georg Deutsch
Transport labour has been a fundamental feature in every economic system and in every epoch of humanity worldwide. This volume considers the history of labour in transport from 1750 to 1950, in the context of globalisation and the evolution of capitalism. The nine articles presented in this collective work span these two centuries and address a largely neglected aspect of labour history in transport: the stories from the Global South (Africa, Asia and Latin America). The transport sectors touched upon in these studies are wide-ranging, encompassing a variety of workers, from porters to...
