This book is an introduction to quantum mechanics for undergraduates and interested lay persons. The presentation is both reader-friendly and complete. The first four chapters cover the conceptual and philosophical aspects of quantum mechanics, before the next eleven chapters gently present the mathematics underlying the subject. After a chapter on the history of the theory, the whole of quantum mechanics is then presented. This is followed by applications of the theory and a revision chapter, before we briefly look ahead at relativistic quantum theory.

This new book aims to guide both the experimentalist and theoretician through their compulsory laboratory courses forming part of an undergraduate physics degree. The rationale behind this book is to show students and interested readers the value and beauty within a carefully planned and executed experiment, and to help them to develop the skills to carry out experiments themselves.

Newtonian mechanics is taught as part of every physics program for several reasons: it is a towering intellectual achievement; it has diverse applications; and it provides a context for teaching modelling and problem solving. This text gives equal prominence to all three missions. It therefore includes some advanced material as well as the customary introductory topics and is designed to be studied over an extended time-frame. The problem-solving aspects are developed more fully than in many other texts; showing readers how problems are approached and bringing out the ways of going about...

Solid State Physics provides a broad introduction to some of the principal areas of the physical phenomena in solid materials and is aimed broadly at undergraduate students of physics and engineering related subjects. The physical properties of materials are intimately related to the crystalline symmetry of atoms as well as the atomic species present. This includes the electronic, mechanical, magnetic and optical properties of all materials. These subjects are treated in depth and provide the reader with the tools necessary for an understanding of the varied phenomena of materials....

Basic Electromagnetic Theory is designed as a concise introduction to electromagnetic field theory emphasizing the physical foundations of the subject. It is aimed at both undergraduates and interested laypersons. It has been based on the author's experience both as a former field theorist (working on quantum electrodynamics) and currently as an applied optical physicist. As such, it covers much material from the standard university syllabus. It also develops a number of themes in greater detail, so as to cover a number of non-standard topics that provide a fuller understanding of the...

This book concentrates on presenting the theory of special relativity as the geometry of space-time. The presentation is straightforward, complete and reader-friendly, with explanatory asides, that give historical context and links with other branches of physics and mathematics. The first four chapters give a complete description of the special theory and the nature of space and time, with the minimum use of mathematics. The mathematics necessary is introduced in the following five chapters, with the final fifteen chapters devoted to a comprehensive and detailed exposition of Einstein's...
