Composite decisions consist of interconnected parts or subdecisions and correspond to a composite (composable, modular, decomposable) system. The composite decision approach extends the traditional paradigm of decision making of Herbert A. Simon, i.e. choice of the best alternative(s), and realizes a two-stage solving scheme: (a) the selection of alternatives as the best subdecisions or local decisions and (b) composition of the selected local decisions into a composite global decision while taking into account the quality of the local decisions and their compatibility.

Problems with high stakes, involving human perceptions and judgements, and whose resolutions have long-term repercussions, call for a rational approach to their solution. Strategic Decision Making provides an effective, formal methodology that gives assistance to such strategic level decision making problems. Focusing on applying the AHP to decision-making problems in engineering, Strategic Decision Making explores the three main endeavours of human existence: business, defence and governance. Many years of successfully applying Strategic Decision...

As I write, the financial systems of the world are collapsing with still no clear indication of what the consequences will be and which measures should be taken to avoid such a crisis in the future. There seems to be agreement though, that the financial instruments introduced in the past few decades entailed far too much complexity and uncertainty and that there was too little regulatory control over the use of these instruments. Management of uncertainty with the aim of achieving self-control is the core concern of this book. It was not written with a focus on financial systems, but many...

This text offers many multiobjective optimization methods accompanied by analytical examples, and it treats problems not only in engineering but also operations research and management. It explains how to choose the best method to solve a problem and uses three primary application examples: optimization of the numerical simulation of an industrial process; sizing of a telecommunication network; and decision-aid tools for the sorting of bids.

Network models are critical tools in business, management, science and industry. "Network Models and Optimization" presents an insightful, comprehensive, and up-to-date treatment of multiple objective genetic algorithms to network optimization problems in many disciplines, such as engineering, computer science, operations research, transportation, telecommunication, and manufacturing. The book extensively covers algorithms and applications, including shortest path problems, minimum cost flow problems, maximum flow problems, minimum spanning tree problems, traveling salesman and postman...

This book explains ‘what goes on in a manufacturing company as a product goes through its lifecycle’. It describes more than 70 product-related activities that take place during the product lifecycle phases of ideation, development, production, service, and recycling. The various documents, data, working methods, and computer programs used in each activity are outlined. The book tells the story of a project carried out by a Master’s degree student in a manufacturing company to find out for the CEO exactly what happens with products across their lifecycle. Due to the storytelling...

This book moves beyond a general introduction to Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and its basic elements to provide a more in-depth analysis of the subjects introduced in Volume 1 (Product Lifecycle Management: 21st Century Paradigm for Product Realisation).
After providing insights into the emergence of PLM and the opportunities that it offers, key concepts such as the PLM Grid and the PLM Paradigm are introduced along with the 10 main components of PLM: objectives and metrics; management and organization; business processes; people; product data; PDM systems; other PLM...

This book is about the relationship between Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and new technologies that have emerged in the early years of the twenty-first century. The technologies addressed include the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Thread, Digital Twins, Big Data, digital transformation, sustainable products, and Systems Engineering.
Product Lifecycle Management is the business activity of managing, in the most effective way, a company’s products all the way across their lifecycles—from the very first idea for a product all the way through...
