Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny used to live alone in a boxcar. Now they have a home with their grandfather and are going on a bicycle trip. On the first night of their journey, they get caught in a rainstorm, and take shelter in a mysterious, abandoned farm house.

Now vacationing with their grandfather in the South Seas, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny are supposed to be on an uninhabited island. But they soon suspect someone else is there too, someone who may not want them around.

Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny are orphans. Determined to make it on their own, they set out to find a safe place to live. They discover an old, red boxcar that provides shelter from a storm. Against all odds, they make it into their home--and become the Boxcar Children.

The Boxcar Children are spending the summer on Mystery Ranch with their grandfather. The excitement begins when they meet their old friend, Mike. When Mike is blamed for starting a fire, the Boxcar Children must solve the mystery.
