Cities on Hills: Classic Society in Mesoamerica's Mixteca Alta

Verenice Y. Heredia Espinoza
The study of secondary centres is crucial to understanding how a state functions, as they are important points of interaction between state authorities and ordinary households. In this work the author focuses on the nature of the political organization of the lower-level centres of the Early Classic Period (A.D. 200- 500) in the Mixteca Alta, Oaxaca, Mexico. A previous comparative analysis of architectural arrangements at secondary centers between the Valley of Oaxaca and the Mixteca Alta indicated that single plaza groups were the major form of public architecture. The author interprets...

The Romano-African Domus: Studies in space, decoration, and function

Margherita Carucci
Roman Africa. Until recently, scholars have tended to study architecture and decoration of Roman houses as separate, visual forms of classical art to be analysed in terms of description, classification, and typological survey. This new work follows recent scholarship, in contrast, by examining domestic buildings as a source of information about certain aspects of Roman social realities. Specifically, the author looks at questions such as: How can the function of a room be identified? Can architectural details and floor mosaics tell us something about the activities carried out in domestic...

Patterns of Imports in Iron Age Italy

R. N. Fletcher
This study centres upon a database of some 50,000 examples of imported material in the Italian peninsula, Sardinia, and Sicily dating from approximately 800 to 500 BC, which has been constructed in order to study the beginnings of trade with this region. Fletcher's conclusions tackle a few sacred cows - that metals were the items which lured people westward to trade, and that primacy in this early trade fell to the Phoenicians.

Investigating Ethnic and Gender Identities as Expressed on Wooden Funerary Stelae from the Libyan Period (c.1069-715 B.C.E.) in Egypt

Heidi Saleh
Dynasties 21-24 saw Libyan dominance in Ancient Egypt. This study examines a corpus of funerary stelae produced during this time to determine the effect of this period on the ways in which people projected their identity, particularly in terms of gender and ethnicity. Ultimately it concludes that many changes which can be identified in the funerary stelae reflect trends already existing in Egyptian culture, and that the single greatest concern in the stelae continues to be presentation of social status.

Les pipes de la quarantaine: Fouilles du port antique de Pomègues (Marseille)

Philippe Gosse

The Archaeology of the Clay Tobacco Pipe XIX

The collection of almost 1,000 clay pipes from the quarantine port of PomEgues provides a unique insight into pipe production and use throughout the Mediterranean and further afield. The author's exhaustive study makes a significant contribution to knowledge both of pipe production and circulation in a number of different ways. Although these have already been recognised and published from a range of sites throughout the Mediterranean basin, the PomEgues collection, arriving off Marseilles on ships from many ports of origin, is by far the...

Lithic Raw Material Variability and the Reduction of Short-Term-Use Implements: An example from northwestern New Mexico

Harry Joseph Lerner
Chipped stone tools are a truly dynamic medium of material culture. From initial reduction to contemporary excavation, lithic artifacts undergo continuous change. The role of the properties of raw materials in determining rates of use-wear accrual is poorly understood and has rarely been assessed quantitatively. This study offers such quantification regarding four materials exploited for the production of short-term use implements at the Late Archaic FA2-13 site located just outside the city of Farmington, New Mexico. Both experimental and archaeological use-wear evidence was assessed in...
