Apoptosis is a highly regulated mechanism by which cells undergo cell death in an active way. As one of the most challenging tasks concerning cancer is to induce apoptosis in malignant cells, researchers increasingly focus on natural products to modulate apoptotic signaling pathways. This book reviews the main effects of natural compounds on the different apoptotic signaling pathways, including the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis pathways, the NF-kB-mediated pathway, the PI3K/Akt signaling, and other main pathways. Among the topic specially covered are:
Effects of natural...

Aspergillosis, the leading fungal cause of mortality in immunocompromised patients, presents a serious worldwide challenge--particularly in the face of increasing antifungal resistance. Bringing together the world's leaders in the Aspergillus and aspergillosis fields to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration among clinicians, industry, and scientific experts, the -Advances Against Aspergillosis- conference was held January 26-28, 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey.
This second of two Annals volumes contains short reviews encapsulating recent findings in the basic science of...

This Annals volume presents three scholarly meeting reports: (1) biomarkers in nutrition: new frontiers in research and application; (2) the new revolution in toxicology: The good, the bad, and the ugly; and (3) neuroprotection after cerebral ischemia.
Nutritional biomarkers--biochemical, functional, or clinical indices of nutrient intake, status, or functional effects--are needed to support evidence-based clinical guidance and effective health programs and policies related to food, nutrition, and health. Such indices can reveal information about biological or...

Immunology has rapidly evolved as a field, in particular, by moving beyond merely understanding the basic mechanisms of the immune system to developing diagnostic and clinical applications. As part of this globally broadening effort, the Fifth Congress of the Federation of Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania (FIMSA) was held in New Delhi March 14-17 2012. The presentations centered on the theme: -Translational Immunology in Health and Diseases.- Extending this theme, this volume comprises the topics covered in ten Master Lectures and five award-winning poster presentations, including...

Handedness, or manual laterality of function, is thought to be both universal and unique to humans, making it a highly derived trait, based on an equally specialized neural substrate. By contrast, in various non-human species, both living and extinct, extent of lateralization varies. All known populations of living human beings apparently favor the right hand, motorically, culturally, and symbolically, thus right-handedness is species-typical, as well as species-specific. This laterality of function is correlated with asymmetry of structure, that is, neural, skeletal and muscular, for...

Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) is a phenol phytoalexin derived from grapes, berries, and other plants possessing a spectrum of pharmacologic properties. Resveratrol has been shown to modulate LDL levels, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, to interfere with or inhibit oncogenesis and tumor proliferation in in vivo animal cancer models and in human tumor cells in vitro, to significantly extend the lifespan of the yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiae, Caenorhabditis elegans and the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, and to produce...

This Annals volume presents four scholarly meeting reports: (1) Application of combined omics platforms to accelerate biomedical discovery in diabesity; (2) Prioritizing health disparities in medical education to improve care; (3) The paradox of overnutrition in aging and cognition; and vitamin D: beyond bone.
Diabesity has become a popular term to describe the specific form of diabetes that develops late in life and is associated with obesity. While there is a correlation between diabetes and obesity, the association is not universally predictive. Defining the metabolic...
