Luke begins at the very beginning. He tells us more about the events surrounding the birth of Jesus than any of the other Gospels. These impressive events are to underline the spiritual importance of the personhood of Jesus. Luke introduces us to John the Baptist and includes the account of his baptizing Jesus with a description which again underlines the spiritual significance of Jesus.

The early church symbol for the Gospel of John is the eagle. According to the church of scholar Jerome, each New Testament Gospel can be identified with one of the four creatures in the vision of Ezekiel.
