The state Jammu and Kashmir is rich in aquatic resources ranging from ponds, pools, streams, wetlands, springs and rivers to the voluminous lakes in the plains and in the high altitudes. The River Jhelum has unique importance being one of the leading fisheries resources of the state. The water bodies of Kashmir valley support a wide variety of indigenous and exotic fish species. Among Schizothoracids, the cyprinid, Schizothorax curvifrons Heckel, 1838, commonly known as Sattar Gad, on which present research has been carried out, is an indigenous omnivorous coldwater teleost of Kashmir Valley, inhabiting rivers, lakes and swamps. The present study was undertaken to estimate the growth parameters like L , K, length at 1st maturity, gonadal development and fecundity of S. curvifrons. The study will provide a deeper insight into the biology of the fish with respect to its growth, maturity, and morphology. The study can prove to be a tool for the development and rational management of S. curvifrons fishery in Kashmir.
