In the domain of Web Services it is not uncommon tofind redundant services that provide functionalitiesto the clients. Services with the same functionalitycan be clustered into a group of redundant services.Respectively, if a service offers differentfunctionalities, it belongs to more than one group.Having various Web Services that are able to handlethe client s request suggests the necessity of amechanism that selects the most appropriate WebService at a given moment of time. This book presents an approach, Virtual Web ServicesLayer, for dynamic service selection based onvirtualization on the server side. It helps managingredundant services in a transparent manner as well asallows adding services to the system at run-time. Inaddition, the layer assures a level of security sincethe clients do not have direct access to the WebServices. Several selection techniques are applied to increasethe performance of the system in terms ofload-balancing, dependability, or execution time. Theresults show which techniques are appropriate whenvarious QoS criteria of the services are known andhow the correctness of this information influences onthe decision-making process.
