TV white space (TVWS) can be a promising solution to the shortage of unused radio spectrum resources for future wireless communication systems. In terms of communication engineering, white spaces refer to unused portion of the licensed frequency band. The change from analogue to digital television from February 2009 onwards has freed up large areas between about 50 MHz and 700 MHz, which is termed as TV white spaces (TVWS). Devices operating in white spaces are termed as TV white space devices (WSD) or white gadgets. This book presents an elaborate overview of TVWS technology: studying white space characteristics, sensing and detecting of TVWS in a cognitive environment, operational challenges of TVWS, various proposed standards, algorithms and models of this technology. Studying the multichannel CR operation in a cognitive environment is another part of this research work. We have also gone into the details of a SUN technology and its potential in television white space spectrum bands.
