There is growing evidence that the sexual rights of older people are not being met. One reason, perhaps the main reason, connects with the way that older people are viewed. In many cultures, older age is associated with decline, frailty, and disease - characteristics that are rarely associated with young people - and this construction of the older person positions them as dependent, powerless, and vulnerable. Older people also tend to be denied sexuality, and such stereotypes can influence the way that older people are viewed and responded to. The book addresses a gap in the literature and moves beyond the heterosexual, lesbian, gay, and bisexual divide to incorporate transsexual and intersex issues. Using an adaptation of the Declaration of Sexual Rights from the World Association of Sexual Health, the book provides readers with an innovative and evidence-based framework for addressing the sexual rights of older people. All the chapters address the sexual rights of older people in different ways, and from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Key themes throughout the book are stigma, silencing, invisibility, prejudice, discrimination, and lack of awareness and understanding Addressing the Sexual Rights of Older People: Theory, Policy and Practice is a text for academics, health professionals, social professionals, service providers, and policy makers. It is a timely and insightful collection which provides suggestions on how to apply the framework, as well as ways to raise awareness and engage communities in constructing strategies for reform.
