The Ecology of Sumatra has brought together nearly 1500 references relevant to understanding the components and functioning of the wide range of natural and man-made ecosystems on Sumatra. It was originally written in 1983 by a team at the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies (CRES) at the University of North Sumatra and the team members have conducted field work throughout Sumatra to supplement existing information. This new edition includes a commentary on the last 17 years of development on Sumatra, as well as an additional bibligraphy of recent publications. The Ecology of Sumatra will prove useful to resource managers, ecologists, environmental scientists and local government personnel, and will be enlightening to Sumatra's inhabitants and visitors. Tony Whitten is an internationally renowned biodiversity specialist with the World Bank in Washington DC. He is the mentor of The Ecology of Indonesia series and is also author of The Ecology of Java & Bali. The photographs in the colour plate section of The Ecology of Sumatra are by Tony Whitten. Sengli J Damanik was born in 1942 in Haranggaol, North Sumatra. He began studying at the University of North Sumatra (USU) in 1962, later specialising in agronomy. He obtained his doctorate from Bogor Agricultural University in 1989 and is now Professor of Agriculture at the University of North Sumatra and Rector of Simalungan University. Jazanul Anwar was born in 1935 in Jakarta. He began his medical training at the University of North Sumatra in 1955. In 1967 he moved to the University of Gottingen, Germany, and in 1970 was awarded his doctorate.
