One of the objectives of guidance and counselling is to plan strategies to improve academic performance of underachievers. It is clear that underachievement is not due to a single factor but it is due to multiplicity of factors. A viable strategy has to consider steps for manipulating some of the correlates in planning psychological interventions, which would go a long way in enhancing academic achievement in this special educational concern group, underachievers. Guidance and school counseling programme should inculcate study habits, study skills, motivation to read and learn, memory training techniques to read, reproduce and retrieve the learnt material, use of schedules of reinforcement especially reward strategies, promoting positive feelings of self-efficacy and personal competence and if needed personal counseling. This research report is a compilation of the above with an aim to provide useful insight on underachievement.
