Since ancient Iron Age, human's enquiring/hankering for finding out newer materials to get better advantages, has growing up day by day; biased with technological advancements. Although aluminium is used as a deoxidiser in steel making process, but its use as an alloying element with iron to improve the mechanical properties and material performances in ferrous alloys is still a burning subject area of research. Iron-aluminium alloys has the capability to be used starting from household appliances to machine parts in automotive industries, depending on the amount of alloying additions; to achieve tailor-made properties. Due to formation of hard intermetallic phases/precipitates through heat treatment process, increases the diversified utilisation domains for these alloys. Presently, due to need of light weight, high corrosion resistance, coupled with other mechanical properties, magnesium alloys are in use in many sectors starting from automotive structural components to aerospace industries and also find important applications in marine sector. Hence, the present work is undertaken to investigate the wear and corrosion behaviour/properties of Fe-Al and Mg-Al alloys.
