During the development of GALILEO, the future European Global Satellite Navigation System, several studies emphasised the importance of communication within the navigation sector and its applications. Within this book, a detailed overview about the different applications is given. Not many existing communication systems, for instance GSM, GPRS, TETRA, etc. can fulfil all requirements needed in the communication of navigation related data. This book gives an overview of the different communications systems which are available today. The main characteristics of communication systems are examined with their relevance to an integrated communication system. Summarizing the needs and current possibilities, it is further addressed how a common data structure with a fixed cell size in a packet switched domain could be the basis of a global communication system dedicated to communication of navigation related data. The integration of navigation and communication functions on the same space/ground segment of Galileo would provide, next to common cost sharing, also many synergies for a unique selling proposition for the GALILEO system.
