The purpose of the study was to examine primary productivity and physico-chemical status of Anasagar Lake, Ajmer (Rajasthan), India from September 2007 to August 2008. Anasagar lake is one of the most important lake because of its historical and ecological point of view. During the study, primary productivity and physico-chemical parameters were estimated. Besides this planktons were also identified. During the study algal (phytoplankton) taxon found belongs to five groups. 17. 01, 10, 02 and 11 species of Cyanophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Bacillariphyceae, Euglenophyceae and Myxophyceae respectively were observed from Anasagar Lake. Zooplankton represents 4 groups (Rotifers, Cladocerens, Copepods and Protozoans). The GPP of Anasagar Lake ranged from 1.93 gC/m3/day to 6.24 gC/m3/day, whereas, the NPP of the lake ranged from 0.72 gC/m3/day to 4.99 gC/m3/day. Because of higher values of chloride, BOD, nitrate, phosphate and productivity were also high. So, on the basis of higher levels of above parameter, this water body may be assigned as eutrophic water system, which is not safe for any type of activities especially as a source of drinking water.
