Paul Costa Gavin was born in New Orleans. His parents were Brazilian. They returned to Rio de Janeiro, where he has lived since he was a teen-ager. He speaks English and Portuguese as his mother tongues. He has a master's degree in Brazilian literature and a doctorate in comparative literature. Also he is a college professor.
