As I began to think of a title for my devotions, A Little Gravy came to mind because, for me, it was comfort food. There weren't many mornings during my childhood that my brothers and I didn't sit down to gravy and biscuits for breakfast. There were no muffins, pastries, or croissants to quickly eat on our way out the door. Occasionally, we did get pancakes, but gravy and biscuits was our primary breakfast fare. Although I didn't realize it at the time, Mother cooked us this same breakfast each day because it was an inexpensive meal. A little shortening, flour and milk, along with my mother's special touch and we ate like kings, or so I thought, because I loved and still love gravy and biscuits. She sometimes added bacon or sausage, but I didn't need it. The two foods were enough. Now, many years later, gravy is a reminder of family and memories. It is a reminder of how something simple-something basic-could fill me up and keep me satisfied. I hope that the stories, devotions and poems in A Little Gravy will also give you something that you need, whether it is laughter or a smile, a tug at your heart or a tear in your eye. Most of all, I want to remind you of God's love and amazing grace that He provides every day. I want to make your day a little brighter and your desire to serve God a little greater. These days, I'm alone before I go to work, and my breakfast usually consists of muffins or cereal. But some mornings as I leave the house, I feel a little empty. Occasionally, I sure could use a little gravy. We all could.
